The hull of the "Dr. Fridthof Nansen" is being built at the shipyard Astilleros Gondan, Alvaro Platero. The yard is located northwest of Spain specializing in customized vessels. They have built 15 vessels for Norwegian owners earlier, but this is the first contract for the Norwegian government.
Here you will find monthly news letters from the building progress. The report from november shows: Departed yard facilities in Castropol, Nov. 11th, continued sea trials and final outfitting out of port of Gijon.EMC test passed with only 2 minor remarks. Overall impression after first sea trial period is that the vessel is functioning well.
Yesterday, Gondan Shipyard has celebrated at its facilities in Figueras the keel laying ceremony of the new Oceanographic Research Vessel for the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) of Bergen, Norway.

The Norwegian government decided in September of 2012 to fund construction of a new research vessel. The vessel will be ready in 2016, and will replace the now 20-year-old "R/V Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" which since 1975 has been deployed for most ecosystem surveys organized by the Nansen project, and has strongly supported carrying out fisheries research in a number of developing countries.
