Work Packages

WP1: SI management, coordination and synthesis

WP 1 will coordinate and manage the SI. It will be responsible for the communication between the WPs by arranging meetings, workshops and symposia to summarize, discuss, present, and publish old and new knowledge on main aspects represented by the SI.

WP 2: Sampling program and methodology for trophic studies

WP leader: Elena Eriksen

WP 2 will coordinate and support the field sampling and lab experiments in the SI.

WP 3: Carrying capacity and energy flow through the food web

WP leader: Padmini Dalpadado

In WP3, we investigate the pelagic productivity of the Barents Sea and how it varies in time and space. The main focus will be on investigating the processes governing productivity at lower trophic levels (phytoplankton and zooplankton), and energy transfer to higher trophic levels. Investigating the carrying capacity of the dominant planktivorous fish (capelin, polar cod, young cod and herring) in the pelagic Barents Sea is central work in this work package.

WP 4. Pelagic-benthic coupling

WP leader: Lis Lindahl Jørgensen

WP4 will examine how the benthic and pelagic systems are coupled by analyzing stable isotopes (carbon and nitrogen) and fatty acid signatures in addition to traditional stomach analyses of major fauna components. This will be done in three selected regions in the southern (Atlantic), central (Polar front), and northern (Arctic) Barents Sea. The more detailed studies in WP4 will supplement the studies in WP5 and WP6, while drawing upon data and results from WP2 and WP3.

WP 5: Topology of the Barents Sea food web

WP leader: Per Arneberg

In WP5 the topology of the food web will be further developed based on literature and data, and variation in time and space will be analysed.

WP 6: Cod: a key species and its role in the Barents Sea food web

WP leader: Edda Johannesen

In WP 6 we will work with statistical analyses of empirical data from standard surveys, in combination with modelling and targeted field sampling (handled in WP2) to increase our knowledge of the role of an important species in the Barents Sea food web (topology from WP5), in particular in relation to the benthic-pelagic coupling (WP4) under different productivity regimes (provided by WP3).
